What is love?

This is a question asked in every generation, in every culture, and in every season of life. Yet Scripture gives us an answer far deeper than emotion, attraction, or even affection.

The Word of God tells us plainly:

“God is love.” — 1 John 4:8

Love is not merely something God does — love is who God is. To understand love rightly, we must look not to the world’s definition, but to God’s nature and His actions toward us.

How Do You Know It’s Love?

Love is known not by words alone, but by fruit and action.

Biblical love:

  • Is patient when patience is costly
  • Is kind when kindness is undeserved
  • Stays when walking away would be easier

Scripture paints a clear picture:

“Love suffers long and is kind… love does not seek its own… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4–7

Love is proven over time. It does not manipulate, control, or harm. Love reflects the heart of Christ — sacrificial, faithful, and rooted in truth.

What Does Love Look Like?

Love looks like Jesus.

It looks like:

  • Compassion for the hurting
  • Forgiveness in the face of betrayal
  • Truth spoken with grace
  • Sacrifice without applause

Jesus Himself said:

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” — John 13:35

Love is visible. It shows up in how we speak, how we listen, how we forgive, and how we serve — especially when no one is watching.

How Do We Become Love?

We do not manufacture love — we receive it.

“We love Him because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

As we remain in Christ, His love reshapes us from the inside out. Becoming love means:

  • Dying to ourselves daily
  • Allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts
  • Choosing obedience even when our feelings waver

Love becomes our nature when Christ becomes our center.

The Deeper Spiritual Meaning of Love

Love is the evidence of transformation.

It is the mark of spiritual maturity.

It is the language of the Kingdom.

It is the power that heals, restores, and reconciles.

True love is not weak — it is holy strength.

It does not ignore truth — it walks in it.

It does not fear sacrifice — it embraces it.

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” — 1 Corinthians 13:13

May we not only speak of love — may we live it.

May our lives reflect the love that we have received.

And may the world encounter Jesus through the way we love one another.
