As we celebrate 250 years of America’s freedom, our hearts are filled with gratitude. We remember the men and women who willingly laid down comfort, safety, and even their lives so that future generations could live in liberty. Every freedom we enjoy today came at a cost. Freedom has always required sacrifice.
That truth extends far beyond our nation’s history.
Spiritually speaking, freedom is never free.
The greatest freedom mankind has ever known was purchased on a rugged cross. Jesus Christ willingly gave His life so that we could be set free from the bondage of sin, fear, shame, and death. Our forgiveness was not inexpensive. Our redemption was not earned. It was bought with the precious blood of the Lamb.
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36, NKJV)
The Apostle Peter reminds us: “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:18-19, NKJV)
While salvation is God’s free gift to us, it was not free to Him.
And once we receive that gift, we are called to live in that freedom. True discipleship also carries a cost. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23, NKJV). Freedom in Christ is not a license to live however we please; it is the power to become who God created us to be.
As we wave our flags and celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let us remember those who sacrificed for our nation’s liberty. But may our gratitude not stop there. Let us also remember the Savior whose sacrifice secured an eternal freedom that no government, circumstance, or enemy can ever take away.
Freedom is never free.
For our nation, brave men and women paid the price.
For our souls, Jesus paid it all.
May we never take either sacrifice for granted. Instead, may we walk worthy of the freedom we have been given—with grateful hearts, steadfast faith, and lives that reflect the One who made us truly free.
Freedom isn’t merely something we celebrate; it’s something we steward. Every day we choose whether we’ll live as people still bound by yesterday or as sons and daughters who have been made free by Christ. |
