Jonah lived in a wicked time under king Jeroboam who did evil in the sight of the Lord. As a prophet, Jonah wouldn’t have a lot of patience with sin and disobedience. But then he found himself doing the same thing as the wicked people around him by doing the exact opposite of what God had told him to do.
Jonah could have gone to a hundred other cities and preached powerful messages, but he still would have been in disobedience because God told him to go to Nineveh. Activity is not the same as obedience. Sometimes we fill our lives with good things, worthwhile things, even spiritual things, while avoiding the very thing God specifically asked us to do. We make up excuses saying that we are doing even more than God asked us to do. We may stay busy, but deep inside there remains a sense of unrest and incompleteness.
Our disobedience may even cause others around us to fall or not fulfill their destinies. Jonah had to be thrown overboard in order to save the lives of the sailors and allow them to go on in the direction they were supposed to go.
True fulfillment is found in full obedience. We will never be completely satisfied or fully effective until we align ourselves with God's specific direction for our lives. God will always provide a way for us to get back on track – even if it’s by sitting in the smelly belly of a fish for three days.
If you feel frustrated, stalled, or lacking peace, perhaps it is time to return to the primary instructions. Go back to the last thing God clearly spoke to your heart. Like Jonah, our breakthrough often begins when we stop running, stop substituting, and simply say yes to God's assignment. Obedience opens the door to purpose, favor, and lasting peace. |
