Have you ever been driving down the road and suddenly a small, quiet voice whispers
inside you, “If you could have anything you want today, what would you want?” I don’t know
about you, but my mind starts racing about all the things I would want that day – everything
to go smoothly, a full bank account, a new car, relationship issues to be solved, etc., etc.
One day it dawned on me. If my Father is asking me this question, it means He is wanting
to give me something that day. Wow! The Almighty God, the Ruler of the Universe is
wanting to give me something right now!
Now comes the question. Do I want to request something or would I rather know what God
wants to give me? Romans 12:2 talks about the good and acceptable and perfect will of
God. I’ve been out of God’s will. I’ve had the good will of God and I’ve had the acceptable
will of God. But when I’m in the perfect will of God everything else falls into place. So I can
request what I want, but most likely, at best, I would get the good or acceptable will of God.
However, I’ve decided I want to always press into the perfect will. How can I always
request the perfect will of God?
Romans 8:26-27 gives us the answer.
“Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses.” - Holy Spirit’s job is to be our
Teacher and Guide. His very strength is in our weakness.
“For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought,” – We don’t know what we are
to ask for. We may be praying for a bicycle when God wants to give us a Lamborghini.
“but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be
uttered.” – The Key!! Praying in the Spirit in our spirit language.
“Now He who searches the heart knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He
makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” – As we pray in our spirit
language, Holy Spirit prays through us the perfect will of God. And we know that “if we ask
anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we
ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” (1 John 5:14-15)
So when we hear that still small voice ask, “If you could have anything you want today, what
would you want?” as mature ones we know to ask for God’s perfect will by answering in our
spirit language. Because what we speak, we have.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, and to those
who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
