Never Compare

One of the biggest temptations we have in life is to compare ourselves to
others. We rejoice in the fact that God made us individually and wrote a
unique book for each of us. Then we look to see how someone else compares
to us. We teach and preach that each of us has specific calling and special
purpose, then we try to model our ministry with someone else’s. We can
always use others for patterns or examples, but we must never be imitations.
When a mother goes into labor, there are specific signs the midwife looks for –
how far apart are the contractions, how much is the mom dilated, how is the
baby turned in the uterus, etc. But after those indicators, each delivery is
different. Some labor is quick, others are long and intensive. Some women
have a low threshold for pain, others don’t. Some mom’s choose to have a csection, others have to have an emergency one. One thing is sure, however
the labor is, the outcome will be a birthing. There is no purpose in comparing
the labor process except to brag or feel inferior.
There are books upon books about what to expect as the baby is growing and
maturing. Once again, these are only guidelines because each baby will
progress at their own rate. Some are more verbal, some have better motor
skills, but all grow and mature. Again, why compare when there is not
comparison. Each child is unique and special, created by God Himself.
In the same way we should not compare our Christian walk, our ministries or
our lives with others. We are only required to do what Holy Spirit tells us to do.
When Peter saw John, he asked Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” Jesus
said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow
Me.” (John 21:18) It doesn’t matter what another person is instructed to do, it
only matters that we do what is instructed of us. Again, comparisons only
lead to pride in ourselves or feeling inferior because we feel someone else is
better.
For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who
commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and
comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 We, however, will
not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God
appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. (2 Corinthians 10:12-
13)
God has appointed us an area of ministry – a sphere or circle around us. That
is our responsibility. Let us work for our God with all our might and strength,
with every essence of our being.
