“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
Have you ever found yourself wishing a season of life would simply hurry up and end? Maybe it is caring for an aging parent. Maybe it is raising young children. Maybe it is waiting for healing, searching for a job, walking through financial hardship, serving faithfully in ministry, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of everyday life. If we’re honest, most of us have lived there.
We live in a world that is always looking ahead. We hurry through childhood to become adults. We hurry through school to begin a career. We hurry through our work years toward retirement. We hurry through one season because we are convinced the next one will finally be easier. Our culture has become so consumed with “what’s next” that we’ve forgotten to ask, “What is God doing right here, right now?”
Recently, the Lord gently arrested my heart. Like many days, I was thinking about everything that needed to be accomplished. Between caring for my mother, work, ministry, classes, and daily responsibilities, I found myself feeling the weight of everything that still remained undone. Then, in one simple whisper, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart: “I’ve given you a gift.”
At first, I wasn’t even sure what He meant. A gift? As I stood there reflecting, I realized He wasn’t talking about something new. He was talking about the season I was already living.
For nearly nine years, my mother has lived with us. Caring for her has required sacrifices. There are opportunities I’ve declined, jobs I haven’t pursued, and countless plans I’ve laid aside. I don’t care for her out of obligation. I care for her because I love her and because I choose to. Yet if I’m honest, there have been days when I’ve focused more on the sacrifice than the privilege. There have been moments when I simply wanted life to slow down or become easier.
Then the Lord changed my perspective. He didn’t change my circumstances. He changed my vision.
Suddenly, I realized that caring for my mother isn’t simply another responsibility to manage. It is a gift entrusted to me for a season. I don’t know how long this season will last. None of us do. That realization changed everything.
How many people would give anything for one more conversation with their mother? One more hug from their father. One more bedtime story with their child. One more cup of coffee with a spouse. One more ordinary afternoon with someone they deeply love. Yet while those moments are still ours, we often miss them because we’re already looking toward tomorrow.
How many grandparents wish they had held those babies just a little longer? How many parents wish they had slowed down enough to savor the years that seemed to pass in the blink of an eye?
I remember when my daughter and her family lived only a few minutes from our home. We saw each other often, but looking back now, after they’ve moved away, I realize what an incredible gift that season truly was. Like so many of us, I was busy with work, ministry, responsibilities, and life. I didn’t realize how precious those ordinary days were until they became memories.
Isn’t that true for so many of us? We often recognize the value of a season only after it has passed. But what if we didn’t have to wait? What if we learned to recognize the gift while it was still in our hands?
Jesus gives us a beautiful picture through Mary and Martha. Martha wasn’t doing anything sinful. She was serving. Preparing. Working. Taking care of what needed to be done. Mary, however, recognized something Martha almost missed. Jesus was in the room.
There would always be meals to prepare. There would always be work to accomplish. But that moment—sitting at His feet—was a gift that would not last forever. Jesus gently reminded Martha that although service matters, relationship matters more.
How often are we like Martha? Busy doing things for God while missing the opportunity simply to be with Him. Busy serving our families while forgetting to enjoy them. Busy preparing for tomorrow while overlooking today’s blessings.
The truth is, every season is temporary. Children grow up. Parents grow older. Friends move away. Jobs change. Health changes. Ministries change. Even the difficult seasons eventually come to an end. Every season leaves us with something. The question is: Will it leave us with gratitude… or regret?
I believe one of the greatest tragedies is not that a season ends. It is realizing too late that it was a gift all along.
Perhaps today, the Lord is asking each of us to pause. To look around. To slow down. To become fully present. To ask ourselves, “What gift has God already placed in my hands that I’ve been too busy to recognize?”
Maybe your gift is an aging parent. Maybe it’s the laughter of your children. Maybe it’s your spouse. Maybe it’s a season of waiting that God is using to deepen your faith. Maybe it’s simply an ordinary day that Heaven sees as holy. Don’t wait until this season becomes a memory before you recognize it as a gift. Slow down. Savor the moment. Be present with the people God has entrusted to you. Sit a little longer at the feet of Jesus. Because someday, today’s ordinary moments will become yesterday’s treasured memories. |
