I find it fascinating how God tends to mark certain places on this planet earth for his own purpose. Jerusalem has always been a place of worship since Abraham paid his tithe and took communion with Melchizedek. It sits in what looks to be a handprint of God. Golgotha, the place of the skull, was not only where Jesus was crucified, but it was where David brought the head of Goliath. The river Jordan divided when the Israelites came into the Promise Land and it divided when Elijah and Elisha crossed over at the time Elijah was carried to his Promise Land (heaven) in a chariot of fire. The Jordan was also where Naaman dipped seven times to be cleansed of leprosy and where Jesus was baptized. Certain places have been marked as portals for certain purposes. Mount Sinai has been marked as a place to hear the voice of God. It is very interesting because the “true” Mount Sinai or Mount Horeb is not even located in Israel, but in Midian or the present-day Saudi Arabia. Mount Sinai was where Moses met God at the burning bush. Before this time, every man served God as he saw fit – Adam, Enoch, Methusaleh, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. But now God introduced Himself to His prophet Moses as the I AM. And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ (Exodus 3:14-15) When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, he took them to Mount Sinai. God spoke to all the people audibly out of the Mount with thunderings, and lightenings and the sound of the trumpets in Exodus 20. He spoke all the words of what we call the Ten Commandments. But when the people witnessed it, they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear, but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” (Exodus 20:19) So God no longer spoke directly to the people. He spoke to his prophet who relayed the message to the people. Moses went up to the top of Mount Sinai and there God gave Moses the Law, the Old Covenant. After the showdown on Mount Carmel, Elijah traveled 750 miles to Mount Sinai. The Scriptures say and an angel came and fed him twice “because the journey is too great for you.” (I Kings 19:7) The food from the angel strengthened Elijah 40 days and nights as he traveled to the Mount. There he found a cave to spend the night. The Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah answered, I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.” (1 Kings 19:10) God told him to go out and stand on the mountain before Him. And the Scriptures said that God passed by in a great wind, and in an earthquake, and in a fire, but Elijah didn’t recognize God in any of them. But then he heard a still small voice – and at that voice Elijah went out and spoke with God. So we see clearly where Mount Sinai played a vital role in the Law and the Prophets. The Law was written and the principle of God speaking to the people through His prophets were both established at the certain place on earth. Now fast forward about a thousand years, Jesus had died, risen and ascended. His disciples were still trying to figure out how they were to worship now since Jesus had fulfilled the Law. A scholarly pharisee named Paul was radically saved. Paul took a trip to Mount Sinai. And he said, “But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 1:11-12) Paul, the man who wrote most of the New Testament and almost all of the New Covenant doctrine that we know as the Epistles, received his revelation at Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is the place on earth where God chose to set as a starting point for the Law and the Prophets; for the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. It is the place God unequivocally showed His desire to communicate with us and we can know without a doubt that He still wants us to hear His voice today.
