These Things, Not Those

Our mind is always busy. We are constantly thinking, analyzing, trying to figure out the way
we should go and what we should do. Situations have us cornered where we don’t see a
way out. How will we accomplish this or how could that be ever remedied? We mull it over
and often we get back into that same rut of trying to figure it out in our mind, or we find
ourselves feeling futile because the problem seems too convoluted and tangled and
impossible to ever work out. We have been given a “Silver Bullet” in these situations, and
really every situation.
God has instructed us to come to Him rather than worrying and stewing over the things that
are concerning us. He has assured us that in lieu of anxious thoughts or fearful worrying we
should stop and bring that very thing to Him in prayer. He tells us today in real time, to bring
our concerns, our family issues, and our situations at work to Him. Tell Him about it. He
already knows so we’re not telling Him anything new, but in expressing it to Him and
visually handing that thing over to Him we transfer the concern to Him. He has promised us
that His peace will begin to cover us and envelope us, knowing that although we cannot,
God can, and will. He wants to partner with us in all matters of life from the least to the
greatest. In fact, if we were to go to Him in everyday matters, it would come natural for us to
come to Him when we encounter something so great that only God could intervene and
bring the victory.
So, rather than worrying about those things, let’s focus our mind on these things. Let’s busy
our never sleeping mind with good thoughts. We should get our mind thinking on the things
that we know are true and right, such as the scriptures from His Holy Word. We would do
well filling our hearts with His promises and thinking of all the good that is in store for us.
Let’s focus on having a heart that is always honest and doing things the right way. We
should ponder the things that are just and right in this world and determine to live in such a
manner each day. We must train our mind to consider things that are both pure and lovely.
God wants our heart to be clean and without a lot of lurid or filthy clutter. How can He work
with us if all we think of is negativity and trash. We must endeavor with all our hearts to
steer our heart toward the right, rather than the wrong. It is an integral part of staying “in the
Spirit”.
Let us look for the good, for the stories of blessing rather than desiring to hear all the gory
details. We know that what we hear and see cannot be unheard or unseen, and it will
hinder our pure walk with God if we fill our spirt with all the filth and degradation of the
world around us. We are instructed to “be in the world”, yet not to be “of the world”, we are
admonished to “come out of the world and be separate”. Yes, we are supposed to be
different than the world. If we are not, then we need to course correct so we can get back
on God’s wavelength.
Our thoughts are ours. We are in control of whether we are thinking about good or evil. God
wants us to live in the good and in the right. He wants us to live in a state of purity twenty-
four seven. This begins in our mind and in our thought life. What we are thinking in our mind
will flesh itself out in our life. If we want only good and not the bad then we need to do as He
has instructed, get a handle on what we are thinking and think on the right and the good.
Also, we bring all things to Him in prayer and let Him cover our hearts and lives in total
peace.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are
just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good
report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God
of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:6-9 NKJV)
