For the Most Holy Day of Atonement the high priest spent days preparing himself. On that special day, he laid aside his high priest garments – the identity of his position – and washed his body in water removing all dirt and contaminates. He then clothed himself in plain white linen and presented himself with the blood of a bull and a ram before the veil of the Holy of Holies. The High Priest then, having been washed with water and his sins covered by the blood of animals, would pass through the veil to make atonement for the people before the mercy seat.
And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. 1 John 5:8
Three bear witness on earth to the salvation of Jesus: Holy Spirit, the water of cleansing and the Blood of the Lamb. So often in our society today, we forget how important the baptism in water is for our spiritual beings. But it is with this water that we are buried in our sins and risen with Christ into our new spiritual beings. And the water of baptism, along with Holy Spirit and the Blood of Jesus, stands as witnesses on our behalf of our privilege to enter through the veil – just as the high priest entered the Holy of Holies with water and blood.
Hebrews 10:19-22 says:
We do not come arrogantly through the veil into the spirit realm and march into the throne room like we are entitled. No. We come humbly knowing that we have the witnesses of Holy Spirit, the Blood of Jesus and the water of baptism standing in testimony for us that we have privileged access into the holiest of all holy places.
