Opinions are Seeds

God set up the earth under the system of seed time and harvest. This pertains to everything under the sun. If we plant an apple seed, we receive apples. If we plant a smile, we receive a smile. If we plant an offering, we receive a harvest for what we named that offering. If we plant a negative word, we receive negative words in return. But opinions? Opinions are just our thoughts – spoken or unspoken – about anything. But in the laws of the land – they are seeds also.

David was dancing with all his might. He was joyously praising God with no restraint. However, his wife was looking out the window. She was not participating and she certainly wasn’t feeling joyous. She was embarrassed because of David and “despised him in her heart.” (2 Sam 6:16) When David came home, Michal expressed her opinion of David and how she did not think he acted like a king of Israel. It was just her opinion, but she was barren and never had children.

It was just Michal’s opinion about the praise service. But how many times do we hear: it’s too loud; it’s too dark; it’s too bright; they only sing new songs; they only sing old songs; they dance, they don’t dance, they use flags, they don’t allow flags, etc. etc?  This is why in our conferences I often say, if you don’t like what’s happening in worship, close your eyes. You are responsible for how you praise the Lord. Others are responsible for how they praise the Lord. And the responses should be as unique and individual as God created each of us to be.  But if our opinions are meant to shut others down in their worship – be aware, it will bring barrenness in our own lives.

In 2 Kings 7, there is an account of Elisha giving a prophetic word to the king, ‘tomorrow about this time things are going to change.’ (Kim Clement paraphrase) But an officer standing there scoffed and gave his opinion. Elisha told him he would see the word fulfilled, but not partake of it. Sure enough, the guy saw all the provision but was trampled to death in the gate without touching anything.

When God gives a word, it is required of us to test the word to make sure it is from God. If it is, your opinion is not required. In fact, your opinion can cause that word to run you over and pass you by.

Your opinion about another’s mannerisms bring your mannerisms in focus. Your opinion about another’s attitude bring your attitude to the forefront. Your opinion is a seed that will bear fruit in your own life. The dictionary defines opinion as a belief stronger than impression but weaker than positive knowledge. It is a view, judgment or appraisal formed in the mind. So we need to take our opinions captive and form them into positive seeds to reap positive harvests.
