In our daily prayer time, when we quiet our hearts before the Lord and come into His presence, we can follow the example of the psalmist, David. In Psalms 134 David said, “Behold, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD.”
While it’s true that we no longer stand as the priests as in Old Testament days, in a physical tabernacle with animal sacrifices and a veiled Holy of Holies, but in truth we are the physical temple of God and His Spirit dwells within our physical body. So our spirit can and should stand up within ourselves before the LORD and bless His Holy name.
David further instructs us to “Lift up our hands in the sanctuary and bless the LORD” Psalms 134:2. When we lift up our hands to the LORD it’s as though we’re bringing an offering of praise before Him for who He is and what He has done. In this posture of worship, we speak out of our mouth the words of praise that our God yearns to hear. God longs for us to tell Him how much we love Him.
All through the Psalms we are admonished again and again to “Praise the LORD, for He is worthy of praise.” It’s on almost every line. Let’s get this truth down in our heart, God wants and even needs to hear us say that we love Him. How often we hear of how God’s heart was torn up when Israel disregarded Him after all He had done and began to follow the worthless idols of the neighboring nations. Let’s not be that way but rather thank Him each day for His tender mercies.
Our God is “the LORD who made the heaven and earth” Psalms 134:3. He is who we walk with daily. He made the earth with its great mountains and deep ocean depths. He made every animal, every bird in the sky and every creature that swims in the sea. He created the millions of stars in their far away galaxies, and He knows each by their name. When we walk under His blessing we know that He will never leave us nor will He forsake us. We are His sheep, and He is our heavenly Shepherd. He leads us to the still waters to quench our thirsty souls. He provides green grass and every good thing for us to eat. He knows our needs and He is intent on taking care of us; we can fully trust Him.
Finally, the LORD is the God of Zion. Zion is His land, His people, the Jewish people and the precious land of Israel that He promised to Abraham so long ago. We have been grafted into this family through our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and adopted into His family. We are now the sons and daughters of God. So, when the psalmist exclaims, “The LORD bless you from Zion!” Psalms 134:3, we can receive this blessing for we too are children of Zion, a part of the holy family of God.
Behold, bless the LORD, All you servants of the LORD, Who by night stand in the house of the LORD! Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, And bless the LORD. The LORD who made heaven and earth. Bless you from Zion! Psalms 134 (NKJV)
