I went to the eye doctor this week for my regular checkup. It always bothers me when they have you choose which one you can see better – is it number one or number two? There are a couple of issues with this. First you have to make decisions that you feel are based on trick questions. Secondly, the difference is so small you pretty much have to guess which one you think is better. You just hope you get it right because that is going to be the way you see out of your glasses for the next year or so. You also trust the eye doctor to ask enough questions to make sure you are seeing correctly.
Just as in the physical, we also need checkups for our spiritual eyes. Proverbs 21:2 states, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.”
We get accustomed to seeing through certain lenses – the lenses of tradition, legalism, world views, etc. Periodically, we need to take the time to allow Holy Spirit to examine our hearts and remove the false lenses from our spiritual eyes.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:12, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.” We may think we are seeing clearly, but our vision is influenced by what we know and we only know a portion now. As we push into becoming perfect in Christ, our vision improves. But if we do not allow Holy Spirit to correct us, or if we do not allow truth to show us what we are truly seeing, we remain in our darkness and deceit. “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.” Proverbs 12:15.
Sometimes, the difference is so small that it seems insignificant. But discernment is very important in our lives today. Truth and integrity has become so distorted that Christians often excuse the sin instead of repenting and turning from it. “Oh, but Grace covers it all.” – no, every time we miss the mark and do not correct it, we move further and further away from our destination – God’s heart.
Our eyes are important. We need to take care and examine how we are seeing things.
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. Matthew 6:22-23
